As the island gears up for the upcoming elections, candidates from both major political parties are urging supporters to respect campaign materials, warning that the destruction or removal of flags and posters undermines the democratic process.
UWP Gros Islet candidate Marcella Johnson expressed frustration over reports of her campaign flags being taken down.
“I cannot understand why at this stage I have run a clean campaign as a woman, especially in politics, and you would have your supporters take down flags… This speaks to the disrespect by members of this government, the disrespect of women,” she said, calling on outgoing representatives to halt such actions.
Meanwhile, Gros Islet MP and SLP candidate Kenson Casimir appealed to his supporters to refrain from tampering with any political paraphernalia.
“The work that I have done over the last four years is my campaign… I appeal to my supporters just to let them know that we are comfortable. We are working hard. We continue to work hard. We take nothing for granted. There is no need to interfere with anybody’s paraphernalia,” he emphasized.
Both candidates underscored the importance of maintaining a respectful campaign environment, stressing that the focus should remain on policies, achievements, and voter engagement rather than intimidation or vandalism.
