As schools across Saint Lucia reopened on January 6, Minister for Education, Youth Development, Sports and Digital Transformation Kenson Casimir set out an ambitious agenda aimed at building a modern, inclusive and future-ready education system.

In his first back-to-school address since assuming the portfolio, Casimir extended greetings to students, parents, teachers and administrators, describing the start of the academic year as a moment of renewal and shared national purpose. He said leading the ministry is both an honour and a responsibility that requires deep reflection on how education must evolve to meet local and global demands.

“It is a privilege as the newly appointed Minister of Education, Youth Development, Sports and Digital Transformation to welcome you back to another promising school term,” Casimir said, adding that he is carefully considering “what the future of education can and must look like” under his stewardship.

The minister expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Philip J Pierre for entrusting him with the portfolio and acknowledged the collective role of Cabinet in shaping national education policy. He also paid tribute to former education minister Shawn Edward, assuring stakeholders that existing initiatives will not be discarded but strengthened and expanded. “The work Minister Edward began will be built upon, strengthened and expanded as we continue this important journey together,” Casimir stated.

He stressed that the reopening of schools represents more than a return to classrooms and timetables, framing it instead as part of a broader national effort to prepare young people for life in a rapidly changing, technology-driven world.

“Today marks not only the start of a new academic term, but also the continuation of our collective journey to build a 21st century education system that prepares every learner for success, be it academically, socially, or personally,” he said.

Reaffirming the ministry’s policy direction, Casimir underscored a commitment to equity, access and high standards across the education system, noting that schools must equip students with adaptable skills, strong values and resilience alongside academic knowledge.

“We remain committed to creating equitable, high-quality learning experiences that empower all students with the knowledge, skills, and values required to thrive,” he said.

Addressing students directly, the minister encouraged them to approach the new school year with confidence and curiosity, reminding them that education extends beyond examinations and certificates. He also reaffirmed government support for diverse talents, including academics, sports, community involvement and digital innovation.

“Education is not just about passing exams. It’s about building confidence and character,” Casimir emphasized.

Teachers and school staff were praised as the foundation of the system’s success, with the minister acknowledging their challenges and pledging continued collaboration to strengthen professional development, classroom resources and institutional support. “To our teachers and staff, thank you for your dedication. You are the backbone of our education system,” he said, noting that every lesson and word of encouragement leaves a lasting impact.

Parents and guardians were also urged to remain actively involved in their children’s education, with Casimir stressing that meaningful progress depends on strong partnerships between homes, schools and communities. “Education is a shared responsibility,” he said. “When homes, schools and communities work together, we amplify our children’s chances for success.”

Drawing on his background in youth development and sports, Casimir said he intends to apply a people-centred, hands-on approach to education policy, with a focus on nurturing well-rounded individuals from athletes and artists to innovators, entrepreneurs and problem-solvers.

He concluded by expressing optimism for the year ahead, describing the new academic term as the start of a renewed phase of learning, growth and education transformation for Saint Lucia.
