Saint Lucians Head to the Polls in High-Stakes 2025 General Election

Must Read

Saint Lucians head to the polls today, December 1, 2025, in what is expected to be a closely contested general election. Voters will cast ballots to elect members of the House of Assembly, with the outcome determining the government of Saint Lucia for the next five years.

The election comes amid a charged political atmosphere, with major parties campaigning on sharply contrasting platforms. The ruling Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) has emphasized continuity, pointing to infrastructure development, expanded social welfare programmes, and ongoing initiatives aimed at stabilizing and growing the national economy. In contrast, the opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has focused its campaign on economic reform, job creation, and government accountability, seeking to address concerns arising from its previous term in office between 2016 and 2021.

Advance polling for essential services personnel was conducted last week, allowing healthcare workers, emergency responders, election day staff, and other key public servants to vote despite their demanding schedules. The Electoral Department confirmed in a press release that any eligible essential workers who were unable to cast their ballots on Friday would be permitted to vote today as part of the regular polling process.

By 6:00 a.m. on December 1, long lines had already formed outside several polling stations across the island, even though official voting time was scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. Election observers reported a steady and orderly start to the day, with strong early turnout reflecting heightened public interest in the election.

The Electoral Department has deployed full staffing and logistical support across all constituencies to ensure a secure and transparent voting process. Voters are being reminded to bring valid identification and to comply with established polling procedures to help maintain efficiency and order throughout the day.
