Digicel Shuts Down Loop News and Plans Closure of SportsMax Amid Strategic Shift

Must Read

CASTRIES, Saint Lucia (July 8, 2025) – Telecommunications provider Digicel has announced a major shake-up of its regional operations with the immediate closure of its popular digital news platform, Loop News, and plans to wind down regional sports broadcaster SportsMax by August 8th, 2025. The move marks a significant pivot in Digicel’s strategy, with the company turning its focus away from consumer-facing content to enterprise and digital services.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Digicel confirmed that all affected staff across the Caribbean had already been notified and assured that transition support would be provided in accordance with local labour laws.

Launched in 2014, Loop News quickly became a dominant force in regional digital journalism, serving up breaking news and in-depth stories to millions across the Caribbean. Its closure leaves a noticeable void in the online news space, especially in smaller markets where Loop had become a primary news source.

Similarly, SportsMax, which first hit airwaves in 2002, was a powerhouse in Caribbean sports broadcasting. It featured major regional and international sporting events and helped launch the careers of several now-household-name commentators and sports journalists.

Despite their legacy, Digicel says this restructuring is a necessary evolution. The company will now center its efforts on Trend Media and its newly acquired tech firm, Symptai, shifting to an expanded suite of services such as cloud computing, cybersecurity, compliance, and digital advertising—areas it describes as critical to delivering value to enterprise clients.

“While we deeply appreciate the incredible work done by our teams at Loop News and SportsMax over the years and the loyalty of our audiences, this shift is vital to positioning Digicel for the future,” the company said in its release.

The decision reflects a growing trend among telecoms providers seeking to diversify their offerings amid rising digital demands. However, it also signals the end of an era for two Caribbean media brands that shaped the region’s digital content and sports landscape for more than two decades.

Digicel closed its statement by thanking its staff and audiences “for being part of the journey,” adding that while the goodbye is bittersweet, the path ahead holds promise for innovation and transformation.
