The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has launched a full criminal investigation into the suspicious death of Police Canine 642 Tyson, a narcotics and firearms detection dog gifted to Saint Lucia by the French government in 2024.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Choiseul/Saltibus MP Bradley Felix issued a strong warning about the implications of Tyson’s death:

“This is a serious, serious indictment on the security of our nation,” he said. “There are so many unanswered questions, so many blank spaces. When I consider the progress that this K-9 unit has made, and then hear the circumstances under which the officer lost their life, I am extremely disturbed and concerned.”

Felix urged Saint Lucians to rise above political lines and demand accountability:

“We need to forget about political affiliations when it comes to our security in this country and speak out. You wonder if you’re actually watching a movie where the Colombian cartel is running things. Very, very concerning.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr. Mashama Sealy confirmed that a post-mortem has been conducted and that multiple leads are being followed. These include forensic testing, operational reviews, and interviews. She acknowledged growing public concern about internal breaches or external interference and assured that the investigation will be carried out with full independence.

“If there is any breach of trust, those responsible will face legal consequences,” ACP Sealy said.

Tyson, whose work contributed to multiple national security operations, was remembered as a “symbol of dedication, loyalty, and valour.” The RSLPF has pledged to continue deploying K‑9 and tactical assets to support ongoing operations.

Minister for External Affairs Alva Baptiste downplayed the impact of Tyson’s death on diplomatic ties, saying:

“It’s very unfortunate, but this will in no way affect relations with our diplomatic ally. That gift was effectively utilized, and from time to time, unfortunate scenarios emerge.”

Prime Minister and Minister for National Security Hon. Philip J. Pierre also addressed the matter, describing the incident as “very concerning.” He called for a thorough investigation and expressed gratitude to the French government for their support. “If wrongdoing is found, the full force of the law must be applied,” he stated.

The RSLPF has reiterated its commitment to uncovering the truth and ensuring that the death of K-9 Officer Tyson is fully accounted for.

As to whether the K-9 will receive a military parade, Prime Minister Pierre stated, “That is a matter for the police.”
