“They Took Her Baby”: Family Mourns Loss of Jhanick Jn Phillip, 18, as Calls Grow to End Deadly Violence

Must Read

Those were the words of a grieving relative after 18-year-old Jhanick Jn Phillip was gunned down late Monday night in New Village, Castries, a victim of what witnesses say was a deliberate and coordinated attack by shooters.

The shooting occurred at around 11:00 p.m. Emergency responders transported Jn Phillip to hospital at approximately 11:22 p.m., but he was later pronounced dead.

A relative, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the moment the family learned of the shooting:

“I woke up this morning, I saw my cousin trying to call me and then I call her back and she told me they took her baby away from her.”

The family firmly rejected suggestions that Jn Phillip was involved in criminal or gang activity.

“He wasn’t… He wasn’t trying to change no life. He wasn’t in no gang, nothing like that. He was going to school every single day. He wasn’t in no trouble, nothing like that.”

Jn Phillip had recently graduated from the Bocage Secondary School. His family said he had done “exceptionally well” and had been looking forward to his future.

“It was extraordinary. He did excellent. It was good. I was happy for him. He himself was overjoyed with all his certificates, his medals, everything.” Describing him as “loving” and “helpful,” the relative said the entire family is struggling to cope with the loss.

“He was a loving child. He helpful, he’s a clown, he’s everything to the family. So right now there, it’s just a big loss.” The island has recently seen a wave of gun violence with five homicides recorded in less than one week. Relatives of victims are calling for an end to the bloodshed.

“It’s very crazy, and I don’t know what they need to do, but it need to stop because that’s not nice. It’s hurting families, hurting friends. It’s not nice, honest to God, it need to stop, because God not sleeping.”

Authorities have not released details on possible suspects, and investigations are ongoing.
