Saint Lucia Launches Independence 46 Celebrations with a Call for Health and Wellness

Saint Lucia has officially launched its 46th Independence celebrations under the theme “Douvan Ansanm: Health and Well-being for a Prosperous Nation”. Speaking at the launch, Cabinet Secretary and Co-Chair of the Independence Planning Committee, Agosta Degazon who highlighted the significance of the theme and called on citizens to reflect on the nation’s progress as it approaches its 50th year of independence.

Degazon emphasized that the theme aligns with the global Sustainable Development Goal 3, which focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all ages. He underscored the importance of integrating health and well-being into every aspect of life and policy-making, noting that health goes beyond the absence of illness to include mental, physical, and social well-being.
“Maintaining health and well-being is cross-cutting and involves partnerships with individuals, agencies, and companies across all sectors of Saint Lucia,” he stated.

The Independence Chair outlined key achievements in health, including:
The opening of the first phase of the Dr. Betty Wells Urban Polyclinic, offering extended urgent care services and housing the National Eye Clinic and Diabetic & Hypertensive Clinic.

The progress on the completion of the St. Jude Hospital and the proposed expansion of OKEU Hospital.

Notable reductions in COVID-19 cases and a 24% decrease in new HIV cases in 2024.

The launch of free cervical cancer screenings, with plans to introduce breast cancer screenings.

Expansion of the Men’s Health Clinic, offering free prostate cancer screenings and urology services.

Degazon also highlighted the government’s focus on tackling non-communicable diseases (NCDs), promoting healthy lifestyles, and improving road safety. Initiatives such as the Performance-Based Financing Pilot Project and the ongoing development of a national mental health framework were noted as crucial steps toward achieving Universal Health Coverage.

The Independence 46 Calendar boasts an exciting lineup of events, including the flagship Baton Relay, Seafood Fest, Business Expo, Legacy Calypso Show, Independence Pan Jam, and the Wildlife Documentary Premiere. Degazon urged Saint Lucians to prioritize health and well-being as they participate in these activities.

“As we celebrate our 46th anniversary of independence, let us make health and wellness a priority,” Degazon said. “This is a time to spread awareness, adopt healthier practices, and take advantage of the opportunities available as we progress toward Universal Health Coverage.”

The launch sets the stage for a vibrant celebration that not only reflects on the nation’s achievements but also promotes a future of prosperity through health and well-being.
