The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs is closely monitoring global and regional trends in respiratory illnesses as the flu season progresses. Media reports have highlighted a surge in respiratory viruses in China, overwhelming hospital systems and crematories. The reported respiratory cases in China are attributed to Influenza A, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), Mycoplasma pneumonia, and COVID-19. However, official updates from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention are yet to be issued. Within the Caribbean region, including Saint Lucia, the typical flu season is underway, marked by notable increases in respiratory illnesses among the population. This coincides with a peak period of travel and visitor arrivals. Locally, cases of Influenza A, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19 variants have been observed. The Ministry urges the public to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures to reduce the impact of respiratory illnesses during this time.
