Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has strongly criticised what he described as a troubling culture of political excitement and public “rejoicing” whenever immigration or visa-related issues arise involving Saint Lucian officials.
Speaking candidly to reporters on Monday, Pierre said he could not understand why some individuals appear eager to celebrate the possibility of diplomatic or personal setbacks for national leaders.
“I never understand why there is rejoicing,” Pierre said. “Why should it be a cause for excitement if something affects the Prime Minister or a minister of government?”
He reminded the public that diplomatic visa access is a standard feature of international relations and cautioned against using external developments as fodder for political hostility.
“The people who will be affected for now will not be affected. Cabinet ministers will always have diplomatic visas,” he said.
The Prime Minister urged Saint Lucians to reflect on their national priorities and to stop seeking validation through the misfortune of others.
“Why are we doing that to ourselves?” he asked. “Why not focus on ourselves and our development?”
Pierre warned that internal division and political pettiness only serve to weaken the country at a time when global geopolitical challenges are intensifying.
The Opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has commented on social media regarding the visa denial, but did not clarify that the measure applies only to applicants seeking to migrate to the United States.
