Police Seize Over EC$3 Million in Cannabis in Major Maritime Interdiction

Law enforcement officers have dealt a major blow to the illegal drug trade following the seizure of more than EC$3 million worth of cannabis during a high-level intelligence-driven operation conducted by the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF).

Inspector Shervon Matthieu, Officer in Charge of the Guns, Narcotics and Firearms Unit (GNFU), detailed the operation which was executed on Sunday, January 11, 2026, involving coordinated action by multiple specialized units.

According to Matthieu, officers attached to the GNFU, Central Intelligence Unit, Marine Unit and the Special Services Unit executed a carefully planned maritime interdiction after receiving credible intelligence about a foreign vessel suspected of smuggling controlled drugs into Saint Lucia. “Acting on intelligence, officers intercepted a foreign vessel believed to be involved in the illegal importation of controlled drugs into Saint Lucia,” Matthieu said.

During the operation, the suspect vessel attempted to evade authorities. The individuals aboard reportedly abandoned the vessel and fled on foot, successfully escaping capture. Their identities remain unknown.

A thorough search of the vessel led to the discovery of a massive quantity of suspected controlled drugs. Subsequent forensic examination confirmed the recovery of approximately 850.42 kilograms of compressed green plant material, believed to be cannabis.

Police estimate the street value of the seized drugs at EC$3.4 million.

The vessel was secured and transported to a police facility while the drugs were taken into custody for processing. Both the vessel and the scene were examined in accordance with established forensic protocols.

“Investigations are ongoing to identify the individuals involved and to determine the origin and intended destination of the drugs,” Matthieu stated. No arrests have been made at this time.

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force has reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and strengthening border security through intelligence-led and multi-agency operations. “We remain resolute in disrupting drug trafficking activities and safeguarding Saint Lucia’s borders,” Matthieu emphasized.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact the nearest police station or the Criminal Investigations Department.
