The United Workers Party (UWP) has confirmed that former Prime Minister Allen Chastanet has tendered his resignation as Political Leader, marking a major turning point for the party in the aftermath of its overwhelming loss at the December 1st general election.
The announcement came during a pivotal internal meeting the party’s first since the defeat held to conduct what officials described as a candid and comprehensive review of the UWP’s political standing and long-term direction.
According to Party Chairman Therold Prudent, the resignation was communicated in a formal letter addressed to the party’s leadership. Prudent told members that he is now in possession of the correspondence and that Chastanet’s resignation will be tabled before the National Executive for official consideration during its next scheduled meeting in the second week of December.
The development signals the start of what insiders anticipate will be a crucial rebuilding phase for the UWP, which was reduced to a single seat in Parliament following the historic SLP landslide. Chastanet, who has served as political leader since 2013, has been a central figure in the party’s modern era, leading the UWP into three general elections.
In a brief statement issued through the Office of the Public Relations Officer, the party reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, democratic principles, and its mission to serve the people of Saint Lucia. While no interim leader has been announced, party officials indicate that internal consultations and constitutional procedures will guide the transition.
As the UWP prepares for a formal executive session in the coming days, supporters and political observers alike are watching closely to see who will emerge to steer the party into its next chapter.
