The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) bid farewell to one of its most valued crime-fighting partners on Wednesday, as K-9 Tyson, a highly trained detection dog, was laid to rest with full military honors at Rambally’s Funeral Parlor.
K-9 Tyson, who died in July 2025 under suspicious circumstances, was a gift from the French Government to the Government of Saint Lucia on July 18, 2024. Despite serving for only one year, he left an indelible mark on the fight against drugs, guns, and organized crime.
During the funeral service, Inspector Shervon Matthieu, head of the Gang, Narcotics, and Firearms Unit (GNFU), delivered remarks that highlighted Tyson’s remarkable service and ultimate sacrifice.
“Today we gather with both sadness and gratitude as we reflect on the life and service of one of our most loyal partners, K-9 Tyson of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force,” Matthieu said. “Though his time was brief, his service was extraordinary. Tyson became more than a working dog, he became family.”
Tyson’s contributions to law enforcement were notable and impactful. His instincts and discipline were critical in uncovering hidden drugs and firearms during search operations. His final mission was described as nothing short of extraordinary at Shed 7 in Port Castries, Tyson led officers to the recovery of 17 illegal firearms concealed in a barrel, an interception that police say saved countless lives.
Inspector Matthieu stressed the importance of K-9 units in the fight against crime.
“In our line of duty, crime fighting demands every tool, every resource, and every ounce of dedication we can bring. K-9s like Tyson remind us of just how powerful that partnership can be…In just one year, he gave us a lifetime of memories and a legacy of bravery we will always carry forward,” he said.
Authorities confirmed that Tyson’s death occurred under suspicious circumstances. A postmortem examination was conducted, and a full criminal investigation has been launched. This includes forensic testing, examination of operational environments, a comprehensive review of recent K-9 deployments, and multiple interviews.
During a recent police press conference, the RSLPF said they are working assiduously to uncover the circumstances surrounding the dog’s passing.
French Ambassador to Saint Lucia, His Excellency Francis Etienne, who was instrumental in the donation of Tyson to the RSLPF, delivered an emotional tribute during the service. Fighting back tears, he described Tyson as “much more than a dog” and vowed that his legacy will continue to inspire the fight against crime.
“We will make sure that the contribution already demonstrated by Tyson lives on, and the fight against crime will go on,” Ambassador Etienne stated.
K-9 Tyson’s military funeral drew officers, dignitaries, and members of the public, all paying respects to a partner whose courage and skill contributed significantly to Saint Lucia’s national security.
