After spending more than a decade on remand, 39-year-old Clint Mathurin of Arundell Hill, Marchand, has been sentenced to 20 years and three months in prison for the 2014 murder of Barthelmy Cox, also known as “Diego.”
The sentencing was delivered on March 31st, marking a key development in a case that has lingered in the judicial system for over ten years. Mathurin, who was 29 at the time of the killing, was initially handed a sentence of 30 years and eight months. However, that was later reduced following a guilty plea.
Cox, 36, was fatally attacked on October 9, 2014. Mathurin’s arrest came ten days later during a high-stakes maritime operation led by the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force’s Marine Unit and Special Services Unit. Acting on intelligence, officers intercepted a vessel off Pointe du Cap in the island’s north around 10:00 p.m. Mathurin reportedly jumped overboard in an attempt to evade capture but was swiftly apprehended.
At the time of his arrest, Mathurin was also facing a slew of unrelated charges, including assault and kidnapping, further compounding his legal troubles.
