In commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2024, the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs organized a Mini Health Fair at the Des Barras Primary School, engaging students and teachers in an interactive program aimed at promoting awareness of diabetes prevention and management. Health officials from various units, including the Nutrition Unit, Bureau of Health Education, Mental Health Unit, and Dental Services, collaborated to deliver an engaging initiative that combined education with fun, hands-on activities.

Field Nutrition Officer Olivia Felix outlined the activities and key messages shared during the event. “We took them through dif erent stations where we talked about sugar consumption as part of our ongoing ‘Twop Sik Pah Bon’ campaign. Students learned how to read labels, calculate sugar intake, and choose healthier alternatives. Our health educators provided insights into diabetes, including its impact on the body. The dental team conducted oral health checks, while the mental health unit explained how sugar affects the brain and overall mental well- being,” Felix explained.

Felix also stressed the importance of targeting young audiences with health education. “Starting with young children ensures they take these messages home, make healthier choices, and help reduce the prevalence of diabetes and related complications like kidney disease in Saint Lucia. Early education is key to driving the change we need,” she added.

Des Barras Primary School Principal, Ezra Joseph, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, calling it a transformative experience for students.“ Our students have never experienced anything like this before. It’s eye-opening, especially as diabetes has affected so many in our community, including their families. This collaboration with health officials builds on our efforts to encourage drinking more water and regular exercise. Today’s activities truly are the icing on the cake,” he said.

Through initiatives like the Mini Health Fair, the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs continues to equip young people with the tools and knowledge to lead healthier lives, fostering a future with lower rates of non-communicable diseases in Saint Lucia.
