The Government of Saint Lucia has confirmed that the United Kingdom will introduce a visa requirement for Saint Lucian nationals travelling to the UK, including those transiting through the country en route to other destinations.
In a statement issued on Thursday, March 5, the Ministry of External Affairs, International Trade, Civil Aviation and Diaspora Affairs said it had received formal communication from the UK Government advising that a visit visa requirement will now apply to Saint Lucians.
According to correspondence from the UK Home Office dated March 4, 2026, the measure forms part of the United Kingdom’s broader efforts to strengthen border management and address pressures within its immigration and asylum systems.
UK authorities indicated that there has been a notable increase in Saint Lucian nationals entering the United Kingdom as visitors and subsequently claiming asylum, a development the UK says has placed additional strain on its border and asylum processes.
The new visa requirement took effect on March 5, 2026 at 15:00 GMT (11:00 a.m. AST).
However, officials say a six-week transition period will remain in place until 15:00 BST (12:00 p.m. AST) on April 16, 2026. During this period, Saint Lucian nationals who already possess an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) and had booked travel prior to the policy change may continue to enter the United Kingdom visa-free if they arrive before the end of the transition window.
The Government of Saint Lucia acknowledged that the decision is likely to raise concern among citizens, particularly those who travel to the United Kingdom for family visits, business, education and tourism.
Authorities say active diplomatic engagement with the United Kingdom is ongoing as Saint Lucia seeks to better understand the decision and explore possible pathways for maintaining strong mobility arrangements between the two countries.
The Government also indicated that further guidance will be provided to the public regarding visa application procedures and updated travel requirements as additional information becomes available.
