A serious medical emergency turned tragic on Thursday when a 10-year-old student collapsed during a physical education (PE) class at a primary school and later died. The incident has sparked grief and serious concerns from her family about how the emergency was handled.
The child has been identified as Amelia Isidore of Bois D’Inde, Jacmel. According to information shared by relatives, Amelia had a history of seizures.
Based on the family’s account, the child was not taken directly to hospital following her collapse. Relatives say she was instead taken to the Jacmel health centre, where she did not receive the emergency medical intervention they believe was urgently needed at the time. They further claim that distress calls placed to emergency services for an ambulance resulted in an inordinate wait.
Family members report that Amelia’s condition deteriorated rapidly while at the facility. They have expressed concern that health aides were not adequately trained to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), leaving them distressed as the child’s condition worsened. These concerns reflect the family’s account and have not been independently verified.
The family has further raised concerns that no teacher or school official accompanied the child during the medical emergency and has questioned whether a direct transfer to hospital might have resulted in a different outcome.
Amelia later died. No official determination has yet been released regarding the precise medical cause of death.
Authorities are expected to follow standard procedures in cases involving sudden deaths, and further information is anticipated.
