Former Minister for Commerce has urged Saint Lucians to take advantage of the proposed VAT-free day on December 22nd, while encouraging consumers to shop responsibly and focus on essential purchases as the country moves toward implementation of the initiative promised by Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre. “It is to the benefit of every consumer,” the former minister said. “But what I want to tell you is purchase what you need.”
The VAT-free day allows consumers to purchase selected items without paying Value Added Tax, which is currently set at 12.5 percent. The measure is aimed at reducing the cost of essential goods, particularly food items, providing temporary relief to households during the Christmas season.
Legislation to give effect to the VAT-free day was passed in both the House of Assembly and the Senate on December 16, after receiving support from lawmakers across the political spectrum.
Independent Member of Parliament for Castries North, Hon Stephenson King, welcomed the move, describing it as a clear demonstration of compassion and people-centred governance. “It shows compassion. It shows love. It shows appreciation and demonstrates commitment to a cause, the cause of the people,” King said. “This government has shown that it cares, that it puts people first, and that it reaches out in a meaningful way, especially during this season of goodwill.”
King also highlighted that the items covered under the VAT-free arrangement are primarily essential goods, noting that the initiative reflects sensitivity to the daily needs of Saint Lucians.
He further suggested that businesses clearly display the savings consumers receive at the point of sale, so the benefits of the VAT exemption are fully understood and appreciated.
Adding his support, Dennery North MP Hon Shawn Edward said the VAT-free day reflects a consistent approach by the Prime Minister to ensure that people remain at the centre of national development. “This is a Prime Minister who, from day one, has said that the people of Saint Lucia must always be at the top of whatever development agenda we pursue,” Edward said. “When, on that day, the average customer enjoys a 12.5 percent discount, for me it is about the government reaching out to people, irrespective of their station in life.”
Edward praised the administration for striking a balance between attracting major investors and supporting ordinary citizens.
“This is the same government that can lead in a way that gives billionaire investors the confidence to invest here,” he said. “At the same time, it is a government that will, without delay, reinstate measures like the distress fund when our most vulnerable people need it.”
He described the VAT-free initiative as a reflection of compassionate leadership. “This gesture speaks to a compassionate government, a government that puts people first, and a Prime Minister who understands the people of Saint Lucia,” Edward added.
The VAT-free day is expected to provide short-term financial relief for consumers while reinforcing the government’s commitment to easing the cost of living for Saint Lucian households.
