Global ride-hailing platform Uber has officially opened registration for licensed taxi drivers in Saint Lucia, marking a major step toward the app’s anticipated launch on the island.
Uber announced on Tuesday that licensed taxi operators can now begin the onboarding process through the Uber Driver app, allowing them to be fully registered and ready once the service goes live. The rollout will operate exclusively through Uber Taxi, a model that connects riders only with licensed taxi drivers, in line with local regulations.
“We are looking for licensed taxi drivers who want to increase their earnings through technology and reach a growing segment of tourists who already know and prefer the Uber app,” said Jorge Cordero, General Manager for Uber in Saint Lucia. “The onboarding process is now active for our Uber Taxi option, which focuses on rides completed by licensed taxis.”
Uber has also begun direct engagement with taxi associations and transportation companies across the island, encouraging them to register their interest through a dedicated sign-up portal. According to the company, collaboration with existing taxi stakeholders is a central part of its approach.
“Our goal is to work collaboratively with licensed taxi operators and their organizations as we prepare for Uber Taxi on the island,” Cordero added.
Once launched, the Uber app in Saint Lucia will allow residents and visitors to request trips using Uber Taxi, offering tourists, many of whom already rely on Uber while traveling, a familiar and convenient option for local transportation. Uber Taxi has already seen strong uptake in other Caribbean markets, including Barbados, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic, as well as in major global cities such as New York, Paris, and Bogotá.
To complete registration, taxi drivers will be required to submit several documents during the onboarding process, including a valid driver’s licence, taxi permit, insurance, a US-dollar bank account, a profile photo, and a completed background check.
Interested drivers can begin the sign-up process at t.uber.com/stlucia, while taxi associations and transportation companies can access a separate registration link to receive additional information.
Uber noted that its immediate focus is on onboarding drivers and engaging with them as key stakeholders. An official launch date for Saint Lucia will be announced once preparations are finalized.
