Marcella Johnson Expresses Confidence and Purpose After Official Nomination for Gros Islet

UWP candidate Marcella Johnson says she is entering the final stretch of the 2025 general election campaign with excitement, confidence, and a deep sense of responsibility after officially registering her nomination on Friday, November 21st. Describing Nomination Day as “the start of a new beginning for St. Lucia,” Johnson said the moment represents hope, accountability, and the promise of more responsive leadership for the people of Gros Islet.

Johnson emphasized that her candidacy is rooted in listening to residents and understanding the realities facing families across the constituency. She highlighted the concerns raised by mothers, single parents, and women affected by domestic violence, as well as fathers struggling to provide for their families. She also spoke about families who have lost children to violence and citizens who continue to face barriers in accessing adequate healthcare. According to Johnson, health care must be treated as a right, not a privilege, and with the rising cost of living, people urgently need economic relief. She said these everyday struggles are among the reasons she chose to step forward, adding that Gros Islet has immense potential but requires stronger advocacy and targeted development.

Asked about her confidence heading into the December 1st polls, Johnson said her year-long engagement on the ground has built meaningful trust with residents. She noted that people appreciate her willingness to listen and her commitment to pushing their concerns forward. Johnson said she is seen as someone who is prepared to fight for the community, pointing to her experience in banking and her success in building her own business from the ground up as evidence of her readiness to lead from day one.

Johnson also responded to recent comments from the Gros Islet MP, who called for Johnson’s Hardware owned by her husband to hold a sale. She dismissed the call as unreasonable, saying it was akin to asking a car rental to hold a sale. She clarified that she is not an owner of Johnson’s Hardware and defended the company’s reputation, noting that it prioritizes quality products that last. Johnson added that in many cases, businesses increase the markup on goods before announcing sales, meaning consumers may not actually benefit from discounted prices.

As Nomination Day marks a major milestone in the election campaign, Johnson says she is ready to continue listening, engaging, and fighting for the people of Gros Islet as the country heads toward the December 1st general election.
