Guy Mayers Rallies Behind Marcella Johnson, Criticises Government Performance on Nomination Day

Must Read

Former government minister and long-serving United Workers Party (UWP) member Guy Mayers made a forceful appearance in Gros Islet today as he publicly endorsed UWP candidate Marcella Johnson during the Nomination Day activities ahead of the December 1st General Elections.

Mayers, who has been actively supporting Johnson’s campaign, said his confidence in her leadership stems from longstanding familiarity and deep community roots. He recalled meeting Johnson years ago through her father, noting that her commitment to public service has been consistent.

“I have known Marcella for a long time,” he said. “Marcella is a lady after my own heart. She has done well for herself, and now she has decided to serve the people—and to serve them well. I fully endorse her because I know she will properly represent the interests of the constituency.”

The former minister, who once represented the UWP in Castries, described the public’s energy on the ground as “very excited” and argued that the momentum is strongly in favour of the UWP. He praised UWP Political Leader Allen Chastanet for what he called a “fantastic team” of candidates capable of steering Saint Lucia in a new direction.

Mayers did not hold back in his criticism of the current Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) administration, accusing the government of failing the country over the last four years. He argued that major national issues including the St. Jude Hospital reconstruction, remain mishandled.

“That is why I am giving my full support to Marcella and to Allen Chastanet and his team,” he said. “I know that come the 2nd of December, when this UWP government is elected into power, everything will change for the better for Saint Lucians.”

Pressed to identify one achievement of the SLP government during its current term, Mayers said he could not name a single one. He pointed to what he described as inconsistencies and confusion in statements from Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, particularly regarding the status of St. Jude Hospital.

“Look at the fiasco with St. Jude,” Mayers stated. “Former Prime Minister Kenny Anthony himself admitted that the building is not complete. But Philip Pierre comes right after and says it is complete. And if you go down there now, you will see them moving old, termite-ridden beds from the stadium into the new facility just to say they have opened the physiotherapy department. This is wrong.”

Mayers insisted that the electorate will “hold the government accountable” for what he called deception and mismanagement.

Nomination Day activities continued across the island as candidates officially registered to contest the December 1st General Elections, with Gros Islet emerging as one of the most competitive battleground constituencies this cycle.
