Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre used his November 17th pre-cabinet press conference to speak on several national issues, including healthcare developments, the economy, and his party’s readiness ahead of the December 1st general election.
Addressing questions on the recently handed-over St. Jude Hospital, Pierre confirmed that the structure built under the previous administration in 2021 will be utilized, stressing continuity in healthcare delivery. He also responded to concerns from the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association, who said they were not formally invited to the ceremony. “No, not aware. And if that happens, I apologize, and that will be changed,” the Prime Minister said.
On economic matters, Pierre defended the government’s decision to introduce a one-day VAT-free holiday in December, responding to criticism from Opposition spokesperson Tommy Descartes. According to Pierre, the initiative is possible because “our revenue has performed satisfactorily.” He added that the measure is intended as a gesture of appreciation: “We can give back to the public of St Lucia… They are the ones who helped by the production, by the work, to help us do well in our revenue.”
Pierre accused the United Workers Party of opposing policies intended to help citizens. “Any time something that will benefit the people, the United Workers Party finds a way to attack it… whether it be paying facility fees, CXE fees, period poverty alleviation, increasing pensions, a minimum wage, or ensuring there is one university graduate. Anything progressive is attacked by an opposition party with no alternatives,” he said.
Reflecting on his government’s record, Pierre expressed confidence that his administration has delivered on its promises. “I put my feet in the hands of God and the people… We have a booklet of our delivery. What we’ve done, we’ve documented—34 pages. We’ve delivered.”
Looking ahead to the December 1st election, the Prime Minister said he remains confident in his party’s chances and urged Saint Lucians to continue supporting the government’s agenda.
Pierre also referenced past statements from the opposition related to the St. Jude reconstruction, remarking that “the box could not function without the old building, without the other buildings,” adding that the opposition’s criticisms are now “being used… against them.”
