Guy Joseph Questions St. Jude Reconstruction Costs

Must Read

Deputy Leader of the Opposition United Workers Party (UWP) and Castries South East candidate, Guy Joseph, launched a fresh round of personal and political attacks during the party’s Sunday Live broadcast on September 28, 2025.

His remarks combined criticisms of the Saint Lucia Labour Party’s (SLP) newly endorsed candidate for the constituency with sharp questioning of the government’s handling of the St. Jude Hospital Reconstruction Project.

Joseph accused his rival of lacking a clear understanding of the constituency’s boundaries and services. “I have represented Cul de Sac. I have been in that constituency and up to now, I don’t know that government owns a single factory shell in Cul de Sac. I know there were a few in Odsan. Our constituency ends in Cacao by the Cacao playing field. Babonneau police station and fire station is less than a mile and a half away. But the closest police station and fire station to Castries South East, according to the newly launched candidate, is Dennery,” Joseph said, dismissing his opponent’s claims as misleading.

He further broadened his criticism to national governance, drawing a link between leadership and outcomes.

“No organization can rise above its leader. So if Saint Lucia is in Europe, I can now understand why Dennery is the closest community to Castries South East,” he remarked pointedly.

Turning his attention to healthcare, Joseph strongly criticized the government’s expenditure on the St. Jude Hospital Reconstruction, alleging financial mismanagement.

“I want the Labour Party to explain to Saint Lucia how they could justify spending $400 million on a 100-bed hospital. But from what they said, it’s a 50-bed hospital and not a 100-bed. Even if I give them the benefit of the doubt on 100 beds, that makes it $4 million per bed. How is that possible?” he asked.

The Opposition United Workers Party has been veery critical of the Pierre Administratiomn’s handling of the St Jude Hospital Reconstruction Project despite their failed attempts to rebuilt the medical facility to deliver to the people of Saint Lucia, particularly, these in the south of the island.

Just recently, Prime Minister Philip J Pierre at a meeting disclosed to party supporters that the St Jude Hospital will be commissioned before the end of 2025, with just two. Months left in the year.

The UWP deputy leader’s comments come amid escalating political tensions as both major parties position themselves ahead of the next general election.
