RSLPF Reports 16% Drop in Crime, But Firearm Offenses and Attempted Murders on the Rise

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has reported a 16 percent reduction in overall crime for the period January 1 to September 24, 2025, compared to the same period in 2024.

The findings were presented by Superintendent of Police Troy Lamontagne, head of the Department of Road Safety and Traffic Investigations, at a press conference on September 25th, where he presented an analysis report on serious crime.

The report shows an overall decline in reported crime but highlights troubling increases in attempted murders and firearm-related offenses.

According to Superintendent Lamontagne, “In 2025, a total of 10,557 cases were recorded compared to 12,552 in the same period in 2024. This represents a 16% reduction, or 1,965 fewer cases.” However, he cautioned that despite the reduction, case detections also fell by 18%.

The Central Division accounted for the largest share of criminal incidents, recording 42% of total cases, followed by the Southern Division with 35% and the Northern Division with 23%.

Seven out of eight priority offenses declined in 2025. Murders dropped slightly from 58 to 57, burglaries fell by 40%, robberies by 29%, narcotics cases by 14%, motor vehicle thefts by 36%, stealing from the person by 1%, and sexual offenses by 26%. Fire offenses, however, rose by 4%.

From January to September 2025, Saint Lucia recorded 59 homicides, 57 murders, one police-related shooting death, and one unclassified case, compared to 60 in 2024. The Central Division registered 29 of the murders, or 51%.

Superintendent Lamontagne noted a troubling trend: “Attempted murders more than doubled, rising from 20 cases in 2024 to 41 in 2025. Every attempt to unlawfully kill is a potential murder case, and this is cause for concern.”

The majority of homicides, 48 out of 57, were committed with firearms. Sharp objects accounted for 10 cases and blunt instruments for two. Gang-related activity was identified in 27 cases, with 12 categorized as reprisals, four linked to domestic disputes, and 11 still under investigation.

The analysis shows that men were disproportionately affected, with 54 male victims compared to three females. The largest group of victims, 28 individuals, were between the ages of 21 and 30.

Firearm-related offenses increased by 4% from 241 cases in 2024 to 250 in 2025, while detection rates dropped significantly. Superintendent Lamontagne reported, “To date, 94 illegal firearms and over 4,856 rounds of assorted ammunition have been seized, the highest number of firearms and ammunition recovered in any period in the history of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force.”

Among the seizures were 66 pistols, nine rifles, five shotguns, five revolvers, three imitation firearms, and one submachine gun. Accessories such as 74 regular magazines and 14 extended magazines were also confiscated.

Burglaries decreased by 40%, with 271 cases recorded in 2025 compared to 449 in 2024. Robberies dropped from 169 to 120 cases, while drug offenses fell from 247 to 166. Sexual offenses declined by 26%, with 121 cases in 2025 compared to 164 the year before.

On road safety, 3,815 vehicle collisions were reported in 2025, down from 4,161 in 2024. Serious collisions dropped from 241 to 189, and road fatalities were cut in half, from 20 deaths in 2024 to 10 in 2025.

However, traffic violations increased sharply. “A total of 13,502 fixed penalty tickets were issued islandwide in 2025, compared to 5,252 in 2024. This represents a 157% increase, with the majority issued in the Northern and Central Divisions,” Superintendent Lamontagne stated.

According to Lamontagne, “These findings underscore the importance of continued intelligence-led policing, targeted operations, and community partnerships to reduce crime and enhance public safety across Saint Lucia.”
