Ministry of Education Implements New Student Deportment Policy Across All Schools

Must Read

The Ministry of Education, Sustainable Development, Innovation, Science, Technology, and Vocational Training has announced the immediate implementation of the Saint Lucia Student Deportment Policy, aimed at fostering dignity, inclusivity, and a positive learning environment across the island’s schools.

In a circular issued by Chief Education Officer Beverley Dieudonne, the Ministry emphasized that the policy sets out clear and consistent standards for student appearance and behavior, ensuring fair treatment and equal access to education.

The circular instructs school administrators to ensure that no student is sent home or denied access to classes based on their hairstyle. Additionally, students cannot be required to cover their hair as a condition for entry or continued participation in school activities.

The new measures are designed to eliminate discriminatory practices, promote student dignity, and create a more inclusive environment where all learners can thrive.

Administrators and educators are expected to:

Fully inform all staff members about the policy guidelines.

Ensure students are treated fairly and respectfully in line with inclusivity principles.

Maintain a welcoming and supportive school environment for every learner.

The Ministry called on full cooperation from principals, administrators, and teachers to ensure a smooth transition into this new framework.

“We must work collectively to create safe, inclusive, and enabling spaces for every learner in Saint Lucia,”

said Dieudonne in the statement.

As the new academic year begins, this policy signals a significant step toward equity and inclusivity in Saint Lucia’s education system, ensuring that all students feel respected and supported regardless of personal appearance or background.
