The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs has issued a public health advisory following a fire at the Vieux-Fort Landfill that has caused thick smoke to spread across nearby communities, particularly La Ressource.
Authorities warn that the smoke poses serious health risks for vulnerable groups, including people with asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), the elderly, and pregnant women. Residents are being urged to take immediate precautions to protect their health and safety.
The Ministry strongly advises individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions, older adults, and expectant mothers to temporarily move away from the affected area until the situation is brought under control. Prolonged exposure to smoke can worsen breathing problems and increase the risk of severe respiratory distress.
Protective Measures for Residents
Residents in Vieux-Fort and surrounding areas are encouraged to:
Stay indoors as much as possible to limit smoke inhalation.
Avoid outdoor activities until the air quality improves.
Wear a face mask if going outside is unavoidable.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to keep airways moist.
Seek medical attention immediately if experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, or chest pain.
“If you are experiencing respiratory symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, and chest pain, please see a healthcare provider,” the Ministry emphasized.
