Fast Food Chain Faces Backlash Over Carnival-Themed Marketing Post

Must Read

CASTRIES, SAINT LUCIA – July 16, 2025 — A fast food chain operating in Saint Lucia is facing criticism from social media users and consumer advocates after its latest carnival-themed marketing post appeared to offend several customers, triggering a wave of online backlash.

The post, which promotes the fast food chain’s Kanaval Krunch Box, features a visually appealing display of fried chicken, fries, a sandwich, and a soft drink on a platter designed like a mousetrap. It boldly reads: “This would catch a lot of you,” with a caption above stating, “Tag a big back.”

While the post was seemingly intended to be humorous and engaging in the spirit of carnival festivities, many found the message disrespectful and degrading.

“KFC not even hiding to insult customers,” wrote one Facebook user, to which another responded: “They are so boldface.”

Others interpreted the imagery as likening customers to rats. “So we is rats for yall now KFC iymc… I go stop buying dat fockry too… koshonee for cash,” commented another user expressing outrage, while another echoed the sentiment: “Same thing I said just soo y would they do that smh.”

Adding her voice to the public reaction, Dr. Thecla Fitz-Lewis, President of the National Consumers Association of Saint Lucia, condemned the ad in an interview with Saint Lucia Daily Post on Wednesday morning.

“We recognize a fast food chain’s campaign featuring a food offering placed on what resembles a rat trap, accompanied by the caption ‘This would catch a lot of you.’ This imagery and language have caused significant concern among consumers across the island,” Dr. Fitz-Lewis stated.

She described the campaign as “distasteful” and “demeaning,” noting that it suggests consumers are easily manipulated and undermines their intelligence and dignity.

“In my personal capacity as a business development strategist who understands the importance of creativity in advertising, I want to urge businesses, particularly those with widespread influence, to engage in responsible marketing that respects the consumer,” she said. “Humour and shock value should never come at the expense of public decency or consumer respect.”

As head of the National Consumers Association, Dr. Fitz-Lewis issued a call to action: “We call on that fast food chain to immediately withdraw the advertisement, issue a formal apology to the public, and review its advertising standards to ensure future campaigns uphold dignity, respect, and responsibility.”

She emphasized that businesses must not forget their success is rooted in the trust and loyalty of the people they serve. “It is the consumers who support these businesses. Once that trust is broken, it can be very difficult to regain,” she added.

As of publication time, KFC St. Lucia has not issued a public response to the backlash. The Kanaval Krunch Box promotion which was posted more than 15 hours ago appears to have been pulled shortly after Saint lucia Daily Post contacted KFC.
