Saint Lucia Braces for 2025 Hurricane Season as NEMO Leads Nationwide Preparedness Drive

Must Read

Castries, Saint Lucia – May 30, 2025 — As the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season nears, the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) has launched a full-scale preparedness campaign across the island, combining scientific training, volunteer mobilisation, and district readiness programs to mitigate disaster risks.

The season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, comes with serious warnings from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which predicts 13 to 19 named storms, including 6 to 10 hurricanes and 3 to 5 major hurricanes. This year’s named storms include: Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van, and Wendy.

In preparation, NEMO has delivered advanced training in Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis and Mass Casualty Management, targeting both volunteers and government employees. Additional sessions covered CPR and First Aid, with emphasis on practical emergency response. These initiatives aim to enhance Saint Lucia’s capacity to respond swiftly and effectively to potential disasters.

District Disaster Management Committee elections were held in communities including Anse La Raye, Laborie, Vieux-Fort South, Vieux-Fort North, Micoud North, and Dennery South, resulting in new, energetic volunteer groups now ready to support national disaster efforts.

On May 26, NEMO conducted an onboarding exercise for new committee members, while also engaging with chairpersons from fourteen National and eighteen District Committees to evaluate readiness and assess local needs ahead of the season.

The public is urged to take proactive measures, including:

Trimming overhanging branches

Clearing drains and waterways

Stockpiling water, food, batteries, chargers, flashlights, and essential items

Identifying the nearest Emergency Shelter
