The Ministry of Education has expressed grave concern following a recent incident involving a parent and student on the compound of a secondary school, reportedly linked to an alleged bullying case. Though full details remain under investigation, the Ministry has broken its silence to strongly denounce any form of violence or threats of violence occurring on school grounds.
In an official statement issued Thursday, the Ministry emphasized that such incidents jeopardize the safety and well-being of students and staff and erode the trust and security that schools are mandated to provide. “This unique case illustrates the need for an inclusive and proactive effort to manage any form of violence as well as the entrenched issue of bullying in our schools,” the release noted.
While declining to comment on the specific case under review, officials reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying anti-bullying policies, enhancing early intervention strategies, and fostering dialogue between families and educational institutions. “Concerns for the well-being of students are valid and welcomed,” the Ministry stated, “but they must be addressed through the appropriate channels. Violence—whether in response to bullying or otherwise—can never be acceptable.”
In response to the incident, the Ministry has engaged in consultations with school principals, law enforcement, counselors, and civil society organizations to strengthen student safety and mental health support across the island’s learning institutions.
Next week, Saint Lucia is scheduled host a high-level Regional School Safety Ministerial Conference, where this and other pressing issues in education will be addressed. Stakeholders are expected to make critical recommendations to reinforce safe and respectful school environments.
The Ministry concluded with a call to action: “We urge the entire education community to stand united in creating respectful, inclusive, and secure learning spaces for every child.”
