‘Mini-Tornado’ Wreaks Havoc in Guadeloupe: Orange Alert Issued Amid Torrential Rains
Residents of Baie-Mahault, Guadeloupe were left reeling on Sunday afternoon after what French media have described as a “mini-tornado” tore through the community, causing widespread panic and damage, particularly in the residential town of Belcourt.
The unusual weather phenomenon struck shortly after 2 p.m., with eyewitness videos flooding social media depicting scenes eerily reminiscent of a hurricane’s aftermath—twisted metal, toppled trees, and debris-strewn streets. French outlet Guadeloupe la 1ère reported that the violent system “sowed terror” among residents and prompted a swift emergency response.
Firefighters and rescue teams were quickly dispatched to the affected zones as residents struggled to come to grips with the sudden devastation. Although no fatalities have been reported so far, the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
In response to the dangerous conditions, Guadeloupe’s meteorological services have issued an Orange Alert for strong rains and thunderstorms. The island is currently being affected by what officials describe as a “wet and unstable air mass,” which has the potential to trigger heavy and stormy downpours.
According to Guadeloupe la 1ère, rainfall totals could exceed 80mm in just three hours, raising the risk of flash flooding in vulnerable areas.
Authorities are urging residents to remain indoors, stay informed, and take all necessary precautions as the island braces for further volatile weather.
