Must Read

Renowned reggae singer and songwriter Calvin George Scott, better known as Cocoa Tea, has passed away at the age of 65. The celebrated Jamaican artist died early Tuesday morning in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, following a cardiac arrest, his wife Malvia Scott confirmed.

Cocoa Tea, born in the Rocky Point neighborhood of Clarendon, Jamaica, gained prominence in the 1980s before achieving international fame in the 1990s. His smooth vocals and socially conscious lyrics gave rise to timeless classics such as Rocking Dolly and I Lost My Sonia, which became anthems in the reggae landscape.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness paid tribute to the late artist, acknowledging his contributions to music and culture. “His smooth vocals and compelling lyrics gave us timeless classics like Rocking Dolly and I Lost My Sonia,” Holness wrote in a statement. “Beyond his musical genius, Cocoa Tea was a beacon of kindness and generosity, consistently uplifting the less fortunate and embodying the warmth of our nation.”

In 2019, Cocoa Tea was diagnosed with lymphoma, a condition that worsened after he developed pneumonia six months ago. Despite his health struggles, his wife recalled his unwavering positivity. “He was definitely very brave,” she told The Gleaner. “About three weeks ago, when he was admitted to the hospital, he asked if I was worried. I said, ‘I am always worried.’ He told me not to worry because everything was going to be all right. He was always very hopeful.”

A devoted Rastafarian since 1985, Cocoa Tea’s music often carried themes of love, peace, and social justice. His influence extended far beyond Jamaica, solidifying the country’s place in global music history.

Cocoa Tea’s passing marks a great loss to the reggae community and the world of music, but his legacy lives on through his timeless songs and the impact he made on fans worldwide.
