The much-anticipated National Independence Expo officially opened in Vieux Fort with a stirring keynote address by Sunita Daniel, Chief Executive Officer of Export Saint Lucia. The Expo, a hallmark of Saint Lucia’s economic and entrepreneurial progress, showcases the island’s finest locally made products and celebrates the resilience of its business community.

Daniel underscored the significance of the event, stating, “It is truly a privilege to welcome you all to this year’s National Independence Expo. This event is a reflection of our country’s entrepreneurial drive, showcasing the innovation and dedication of our local businesses.” She lauded Saint Lucian manufacturers, artisans, and entrepreneurs for their commitment to elevating the standard of locally made goods, adding that this year’s Expo features “an even broader array of high-quality goods, representing the best of our island’s creativity, craftsmanship, and industry.”

A key highlight of Daniel’s address was the diversity of exhibitors, with businesses from across the island and a long waiting list of hopeful participants. She noted, “The response to this year’s event has been overwhelming, with an impressive number of exhibitors registered and a long waiting list of businesses eager to participate. This speaks volumes about the growing confidence in our local manufacturing and entrepreneurial ecosystem.”

The Export Saint Lucia CEO also emphasized the economic significance of Vieux Fort as a center for industry and commerce.

“Hosting this Expo here underscores our commitment to ensuring that economic opportunities are not limited to the north but are spread across the island, benefiting all Saint Lucians,” she stated, recognizing the town’s role in trade and investment.

She further reflected on the transformative impact of past Expos, including the inspiring participation of female inmates from the Bordelais Correctional Facility, whose craftsmanship was a testament to the power of entrepreneurship.

Minister for Commerce and Business Development, Hon. Emma Hippolyte, also addressed attendees, highlighting the Expo’s role in Saint Lucia’s 46th Independence Anniversary celebrations. She stated, “This occasion is not just a commemoration of our sovereignty but also a moment to reflect on the progress we have made and the journey that lies ahead.” She reaffirmed the government’s dedication to the revitalization of Vieux Fort, emphasizing its strategic role in Saint Lucia’s economic future.

The Commerce Minister stressed the importance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as key drivers of the economy. “SMEs are the lifeblood of any thriving economy; they drive innovation, create employment, and provide the foundation upon which sustainable economic independence is built,” she asserted, pledging continued government support in areas such as financing, business development, and export opportunities.

She further discussed the nation’s commitment to economic diversification, highlighting initiatives in the Blue Economy and Orange Economy. She noted that the Blue Economy presents opportunities in fisheries, marine tourism, and aquaculture, while the Orange Economy promotes the creative and cultural industries as integral to Saint Lucia’s identity and economic growth. Additionally, the Minister emphasized the Youth Economy initiative, which aims to empower young entrepreneurs with funding and mentorship opportunities.

Both Daniel and Hippolyte encouraged visitors to explore and support the wealth of local talent on display.

Daniel urged exhibitors to “Take full advantage of this opportunity. Your presence here is a step toward greater success, and we are here to support you on your journey.”
