Major Fire Continues to Burn at Deglos Sanitary Landfill

Must Read

A major fire has been raging at the Deglos Sanitary Landfill since Thursday morning, sparking health and environmental concerns for surrounding communities.

According to the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority (SLSWMA), the blaze broke out early Thursday and has continued into Friday despite ongoing firefighting efforts. The cause of the fire remains unknown. The Authority says it is working closely with the Saint Lucia Fire Service to contain and extinguish the flames as quickly and safely as possible.

The SLSWMA is also coordinating with the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs and other agencies to assess the wider impact of the fire. Smoke has been spreading to nearby communities, prompting warnings about possible respiratory risks.

“We acknowledge that smoke emanating from the site is impacting surrounding communities and we sincerely apologize for the discomfort and concern this has caused,” the Authority said in a statement. “The health and safety of residents remain our highest priority.”

Residents in affected areas are being urged to remain indoors with windows and doors closed, and to seek medical attention if they experience breathing difficulties.

The Authority has assured the public that updates will be provided as the situation evolves and reaffirmed its commitment to restoring safe conditions at the landfill.

The Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority has thanked the public for their patience and understanding during this emergency.
